The principles cover various aspects such as safety, research ethics, equity, transparency. Although the document is not legally binding, it can act as an ethical guide for those involved in the research and development of AI technologies.

More than 5,700 people signed the Azilomar principles, including businessman Elon Musk, theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking, University of California professor Stuart Russell, OpenAI co-founder and chief scientist Ilya Sutskever, DeepMind founder ( later acquired by Google) Demis Hassabis.

Why the Asilomar Principles are Necessary

Artificial intelligence has enormous potential both to improve our lives and to create problems or exacerbate existing ones. One of them is social discrimination. For example, Rekognition’s facial recognition system was found to be biased against people with dark skin.
